Profile
Ravichandran Ashwin is a modern-day legend of Indian cricket. With his wizardry spin and cricketing intellect, he has also become a cornerstone of the TATA IPL. The wily off-spinner has been a match-winner for whichever team he has represented in the TATA IPL. Ashwin first shot to fame in IPL 2010 when he picked up 13 wickets for Chennai Super Kings and played a key role in their maiden title triumph. He formed a lethal spin partnership with Ravindra Jadeja and the duo tormented opposition batsmen on the slow tracks of Chepauk.
Ashwin's most famous moment in the TATA IPL as captain came against Rajasthan Royals when he 'Mankaded' Jos Buttler for backing up too far at the non-striker's end. The incident sparked a huge debate on the 'spirit of cricket' but Ashwin was unfazed and stood his ground.
In 2020, Ashwin moved to Delhi Capitals (now Delhi Capitals) and played a crucial role in their run to the final. He picked up 13 wickets at an economy of 7.66 and was the go-to bowler for captain Shreyas Iyer in the powerplay and middle overs. Ashwin's experience and guile were invaluable to a young DC side and he also mentored fellow spinners Axar Patel and Amit Mishra.
In internationals, Ashwin was the 2nd fastest to reach 500 test wickets behind Muralidaran. He also has the best strike rate for any spinner who has taken over 100 test wickets in the last 100 years.
At 37, Ashwin is in the twilight of his career but his passion for the game remains undiminished. He is one of the most cerebral cricketers going around and is always looking to innovate and evolve his craft. Ashwin's variations, including the carrom ball and leg-break, make him a handful on any surface. With 171 wickets, he is the 4th-highest wicket-taker among spinners in IPL history behind Chahal, Chawla, and Mishra.
Off the field, Ashwin is a family man and loves spending time with his wife Prithi and daughters Akhira and Aadhya. He is also a keen student of the game and has his own YouTube channel where he shares his insights on cricket.
His ability to outthink batsmen, combined with his versatility in bowling, has made him one of the most feared bowlers in the league. With his vast experience and skill-set, Ashwin will play a key role in the TATA IPL 2024. He may not be the force in IPL he once was, but write Ashwin off at your own peril!
Ashwin's journey in the TATA IPL is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and an insatiable desire to excel. Off the field, his commitment to the game has earned him the respect and admiration of fans and players alike. Ashwin's story in the TATA IPL is not just about his records but about his journey of evolving into a cricketing genius who continues to inspire and awe.
