A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness

In the Punjab region of Pakistan, a young woman and man have been brought together by their parents with the intention of getting married. Well matched, the couple, Saba and Qaiser, end up falling in love and are eager to marry; Saba’s father is helping to plan the wedding. But in a twist, Saba’s uncle protests the union, saying that Qaiser and his family, who live near Saba’s, are of lowly status and unworthy of the union. Saba’s family ultimately ends up forbidding the marriage. Stung by the news but determined to be together, the couple steals away at dawn and are married at a local courthouse. Her father and uncle collect Saba at the home of her new in-laws just hours after the wedding. The men drive Saba to the river and beat her unconscious before shooting her in the face and throwing her into the water to die for bringing “dishonor” upon the family.Show more
