After 45 years on the endangered species list and after years of being relocated back to its natural habitat, the BP rig explosion and oil spill ravaged the brown pelican’s nesting homes in the Gulf of Mexico. As oil rushed in at millions of gallons each day, the April 2010 Gulf catastrophe left Louisiana’s state bird in peril once again. Seven thousand birds died as a result but three months after the spill, clean-up workers had rescued 894 birds. This is the story of how conservationists and wildlife activists joined forces in hopes of Saving Pelican 895.
