An NTR starrer, KD No. 1 (1978) is a remake of the Hindi Manoj Kumar starrer, Das Numbri (1976). K. Raghavendra Rao directed the movie for producer Devi Vara Prasad under the banner of Devi Film Productions. The original Hindi story has been adapted to suit Telugu atmosphere. NTR's father, a strict and honest police officer, is framed as a cheat. Shocked, his wife turns mad. She strongly believes that a day will come when her husband's friends will be able to establish the innocence of her husband. To get her treated for her mental illness her son NTR resorts to petty thefts and earns the title, KD No. 1. He happens to meet Jayasudha, who too makes a living by resorting to petty thefts. The minute she sees Jayasudha, NTR's mother is convinced that she is the friend she has been looking up to, to establish her husband's innocence. Her mental condition improves. The movie ends, as usual, with NTR succeeding in helping in the nabbing of the real culprits and proving his father innocent. The musical score by KV Mahadevan stands out.
